A Pastoral Letter to the Faithful Reflecting on Genesis 1:1-2
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
These opening words of Scripture are simple, yet they carry a depth that stretches beyond the limits of human imagination. Before history, before nations, before language, before the first human breath, there was God. Before any human story unfolded, there was already a divine Author. Genesis begins not with explanation but with declaration. It tells us that reality itself begins with God.
This truth speaks to every generation and every person who wrestles with the questions of existence. Where did everything come from? Why is there something rather than nothing? Is life merely a sequence of random events, or does it carry purpose and meaning? The first verse of the Bible answers not with philosophical argument but with confident proclamation: God created.
This statement reshapes the way believers understand the world. The universe is not an accident, nor is it the result of blind forces that somehow produced order from chaos. The world exists because God willed it to exist. The stars that scatter across the night sky, the oceans that stretch across the earth, the mountains that rise in silent strength, and the intricate life that fills the world all exist because the Creator spoke.
This truth invites believers into a posture of humility and wonder. The world is not ours to control as though we were its masters. It is a gift entrusted to humanity by the One who made it. Every sunrise, every breath, every season of life unfolds within a creation that belongs first to God. Recognizing this awakens reverence. Eating a meal becomes a reminder that the earth produces food because God designed it to sustain life. Experiencing friendship becomes a reminder that human relationships exist within God's created order. Witnessing beauty in nature becomes an invitation to praise the One who spoke it into existence.
At the same time, Genesis 1:1 calls believers to trust God even when circumstances appear disordered. Later verses reveal that the earth initially existed in a formless state before God shaped it into a world filled with life. The Creator is able to bring structure out of chaos and light out of darkness. This truth offers hope to those whose lives feel unsettled or broken.
When believers encounter seasons of confusion or hardship, they are not abandoned within a meaningless universe. They remain within the creation of a God who specializes in bringing order and life where there once was none. The Creator who began the story has not withdrawn from it.
This truth encourages believers to approach life with patience and faith. Not every moment will immediately reveal God's purpose. The early verses of Genesis unfold step by step as God forms and fills the world. In the same way, God's work in human lives often unfolds gradually. Faith learns to trust the Creator even when the full picture has not yet appeared.
Genesis 1:1 also calls believers to live with responsibility toward the world God created. If the heavens and the earth belong to God, then caring for creation becomes an act of faithfulness. The natural world is not disposable or insignificant. It is the work of God's hands.
Believers are therefore called to cultivate gratitude, stewardship, and respect for the world around them. Caring for the environment, valuing the rhythms of nature, and recognizing the interconnectedness of life all flow from acknowledging God as Creator. These actions become expressions of reverence toward the One who made all things.
Finally, the opening verse of Scripture invites believers to place their ultimate trust in God rather than in the shifting foundations of the world. Human institutions rise and fall, technologies evolve, and cultures change. Yet the foundation of reality remains the same: in the beginning, God created.
Because the story of the world begins with God, believers can live with confidence that the story will also find its fulfillment in God. The Creator who began the work of creation is also the One who guides history toward its ultimate restoration. Faith looks not only backward to the beginning but forward to the completion of God's purposes.
For this reason believers are called to live with hope. The same power that brought the universe into existence continues to sustain life, redeem brokenness, and guide the unfolding story of the world. The Creator who spoke the first word of creation will also speak the final word over history.
Therefore let believers walk through life with wonder, humility, gratitude, and trust. Let every sunrise remind them that the world is not self-made. Let every breath testify that life itself is a gift. And let the opening words of Scripture remain written upon the hearts of those who believe, reminding them that before everything else and above everything else stands the eternal truth: in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
