The Coming of the True Light

A Poem Inspired by John 1:9

Before the dawn of measured days and years,
Before the sky received its burning sun,
A silence deep as uncreated seas
Held all that was, yet all remained undone.
No star had traced its silver through the night,
No voice of wind had stirred the sleeping air,
Till God spoke forth the ancient word of light
And filled the dark with glory everywhere.

From that first flame that crowned creation’s birth
A promise moved through centuries untold,
A whisper carried over sea and earth
Of brighter fire than mortal eyes could hold.
The prophets watched the horizon of the soul,
Their words like lamps in twilight faintly burned,
For One would come to make the wounded whole,
And every wandering heart would be returned.

Long walked the world through valleys dim and cold,
Through empires proud and kingdoms built of clay,
Through restless dreams of silver, power, and gold
That flickered briefly then dissolved away.
Yet still beyond the shadow and the strife
There shone a hope no darkness could erase,
A promise rising like the dawn of life
That time itself could never quite efface.

At last the hour long hidden was revealed,
The Light approached the borders of the earth;
Not robed in thunder, not with armies sealed,
But quiet as the mystery of birth.
Into the world where grief and longing grew
The true Light came where human footsteps trod,
And in that light the ancient promise drew
The wandering hearts of humankind to God.

O Light that shines beyond the mind’s design,
O flame that kindles truth in every land,
You entered time’s unfolding fragile line
And walked the dust our mortal feet have spanned.
No palace crowned Your humble path of grace,
No royal banner marked Your gentle way,
Yet heaven’s glory rested in Your face
And night itself began to turn to day.

For light once born can never be concealed;
It seeks the corners where the shadows lie.
The wounds of earth before its warmth are healed,
The weary lift their heads and wonder why.
The blind perceive a glimmer through their tears,
The broken find a courage long unknown,
For in that light the hope of all the years
Appears more near than any star once shone.

O true Light shining through the human story,
You pierce the clouded chambers of the heart;
Your radiance tells the ancient tale of glory
Where mercy and redemption never part.
The proud are called to lay their burdens down,
The lost discover paths they never knew,
For in Your brightness sorrow cannot drown
The quiet song that life begins anew.

And still Your light moves outward through the earth,
Through every tongue and tribe beneath the sky,
A living witness of celestial birth
That bids the night of fear and doubt pass by.
Where hatred storms and restless tempests rise,
Your steady flame refuses to depart;
It gleams within the humble and the wise,
A lantern set within the human heart.

So shines the Light that none can overcome,
Though centuries may gather like the sea;
For darkness fades where living rays have come
And truth walks forth in radiant dignity.
The dawn that broke upon the waiting world
Still brightens paths where wandering souls depart,
Till every shadowed banner is unfurled
Before the everlasting Light of heart.

O Light that came to every soul made living,
O fire that heaven’s boundless love has sent,
Through You the world receives its truest giving,
Through You the night of ages finds its end.
And when the final twilight disappears
And time itself resigns its fleeting breath,
Your brilliance, shining through eternal years,
Will guide all life beyond the veil of death.
