The Fulfillment of Prophecy

A Poem Inspired by Matthew 4:12-16

When Herod's cruel hand had sealed the Baptist's fate,
And Jordan's voice was hushed in dungeon deep,
The Lord of Light withdrew from Nazareth's gate,
To Galilee of Gentiles, there to keep
The ancient word that prophets long had sung,
Where tribes in darkness dwelt, by shadow stung.

He came to Capernaum, by sea's broad shore,
The land of Zebulun and Naphtali old,
Where Roman roads had trod with pagan lore,
And Israel's remnant wandered, faint and cold.
There, in the borderland of gloom and night,
The Sun of Righteousness arose in might.

The people sat in darkness, deep and dire,
As though the grave had claimed them for its own;
No dawn had pierced their long, oppressive gyre,
No hope had lit the valley of the moan.
The shadow of death stretched its heavy wing
O'er hearts that knew not how to praise or sing.

Yet lo! A great light dawned upon their eyes,
A splendor brighter than the morning star;
The region and the shadow ceased their sighs,
For Christ the King had come from realms afar.
Upon them light had sprung, as prophets told,
In words of Isaiah, pure as gold.

"O land of Zebulun, rejoice and sing!
O Naphtali, lift up thy weary head!
The Gentiles' hope, the Jews' anointed King,
Hath walked thy shores where once the prophets bled.
No more in twilight shall thy children dwell;
The kingdom's dawn hath broke thy prison cell."

He taught in synagogues with words of power,
Proclaiming heaven's realm at hand was near;
Repent, and turn from sin's ensnaring hour,
For mercy's tide would wash away all fear.
The fishermen He called from nets and sea,
To cast for souls in immortality.

The sick He healed, the demon-tormented freed,
The lame arose and walked in joyful stride;
The blind received their sight, as heaven decreed,
And multitudes from far and near did ride
To hear the voice that stilled the tempest's roar,
And opened wide salvation's blessed door.

Thus was fulfilled the seer's holy strain,
Spoken in ages past by sacred fire:
"The people which sat in darkness saw again
A glorious light, and felt its warm desire.
To them which sat in death's cold, dreadful shade,
Light sprang eternal, and their bonds were stayed."

O Galilee, once scorned by Judah's pride,
Now honored in the Savior's gracious choice;
Thy humble fields where once the humble cried,
Became the cradle of the gospel's voice.
From thee the tidings spread to every shore,
That death is conquered, and the night no more.

Ye dwellers in the shadow, hear the call:
The Light hath come, and bids you leave your night.
No longer grope in error's dismal thrall,
But walk in truth, arrayed in robes of white.
For He who trod thy shores in mercy mild
Is King of kings, and Savior undefiled.

Through centuries the echo still resounds,
In hearts that languish in the gloom of sin;
The same sweet Light that shone on Galilee's grounds
Shines now for all who bid the darkness in.
Come, weary souls, beneath His banner bright,
And dwell forever in His endless light.
